What is a Cabin Air Filter?

No, a cabin air filter is not a filter for a little cabin in the woods! It is a filter for your vehicle that filters the outside air as it comes into your car and keeps the air in your vehicle nice and clean. This filter keeps dirt, dust, pollen and bacteria from entering your vehicle. These filters can block particles down to 3 microns. By contrast, one piece of sand is approximately 200 microns.

Cabin air filters are somewhat new to the automotive industry so not all vehicles have one. Ask one of our knowledgeable experts or check your owner’s manual to see if your vehicle has one.

Like all filters out there, cabin air filters get clogged and dirty over time. Your heating and A/C flow may become restricted or you might notice a smell coming from the vents. When this happens, it’s time to replace your cabin air filter. Hanging a car freshener won’t fix this problem.

Vehicle manufacturers recommend replacing your cabin air filter once a year or every 12,000 – 15,000 miles. You will want to change it sooner if you suffer from allergies or drive in dusty conditions.

Usually the cabin air filter is located under the dashboard or in the engine compartment. Replacing it can be tricky, so stop by your neighborhood Hilltop Tire Service center today and we’ll check it out for you.
