Keeping the kids occupied on a road trip is a safety concern. When the kids are bored, they tend to get restless and grumpy which can lead to tears and a tantrum pretty quick. Screaming and crying are distracting to the driver and it makes everyone else on edge. Make sure you are prepared when you head out. Kids these days grow up around screens and that’s all they think they need for a road trip to keep themselves entertained. But what about the old fashioned way we used to travel as kids? Here are some fun ways to pass the time away while traveling without using a screen.
1. Sing-along – Singing in the car is fun for everyone. Whether you are singing nursery rhymes or jiving with your favorite playlist, it’s a great way to spend the time.
2. Travel Games – There are plenty of games you can play that don’t require a board such as Battleships, Spot It!, Boggle, Simon, Uno, Old Maid and Go Fish.
3. Pen & Paper Games – Don’t forget the good old classic games like Hangman, Mad Libs, Dot Game, and Tic, Tac, Toe.
4. Abstract Games – Everyone can join in with these games: Alphabet Game, Name the States & Capitals, Simon Says, License Plate Game – see if you can find all 50!
5. Books – Bring a stack of books or grab some audiobooks at the library. There is nothing like listing to a good story while the miles roll by.
6. Snack Necklace – Make a necklace out of your favorite cereal, Froot Loops, Cheerios, etc. They keep busy while making and eating their work of art.
7. Coloring – There are so many cool coloring and drawing activities out there. Water Wow, Color Wonder, re-useable sticker books, Spirograph, Boogie Board, etc.
