Now that Spring is officially here, it is time to get your vehicle ready for the warmer weather ahead. That means it is time to assess our vehicle for wear and tear this past winter had on it. There are many spring maintenance items but let us focus on some of the typical maintenance items that we see at the end of the harsh winters we have here in Central Iowa.
Alignment and Suspension System: Unfortunately, the cold temperatures and snow Des Moines drivers experienced last winter produced a lot of potholes. As much as we try to steer around those road craters, there are those times when we unintentionally hit one. As your vehicle bounces over the pothole, you think: Uh oh, what did that just do to my car? The force can be enough to jar your wheels out of alignment or damage your suspension system. It is recommended to have your alignment checked if you’ve hit a pothole.
Tire Damage: Since the tires are the only part of your vehicle that touches the road, they take the brunt of wintery road conditions. You should look for any signs of wear, punctures, or leaks, especially if you hit a few of those obnoxious potholes. We recommend having your tires professionally inspected after winter to check for worn or damaged tires.
Fluids: When was the last time you had an oil change? If it was before winter, it is now definitely time for one. Oil and filter changes play a major part in maintaining the health of your vehicle’s engine. Spring is also a good time to have all your fluid levels checked – coolant, transmission fluid, and brake fluid. If any of them are low, it may indicate a problem. Our experts can inspect, and look for any problems, top off the fluids or flush and replace any fluids as needed.
Dead Battery: Your vehicles’ battery is affected by extreme temperatures. The battery works hard all winter long in freezing temperatures and with warm weather around the corner, your battery may not be able to handle the heat. We recommend getting your battery checked before the extreme heat hits and you are stranded with a dead battery.
Windshield Wipers: The wiper blades took hit last winter with all the snow and ice we had. With the spring rainy season upon us, make sure you will be able to see clearly in a downpour. It is recommended to replace your windshield wipers every six months, in the spring and fall.
Rust and Corrosion: Road salt is rough on your vehicle. If it is not completely removed, the salt will cause rust and corrosion that can damage your vehicle. Make sure you have your vehicle thoroughly cleaned to remove any grime and road salt left from the wintery roads.
