My Car came without a Spare Tire...What do I do?

What?! No spare tire? Yes, that’s right, about 30% of all new cars come without spare tires these days. Most drivers don’t think about spare tires until they need one. It’s a good idea to find out what your vehicle has so you’re prepared in an emergency. Check your owner's manual, if your car didn’t come with a spare tire, it may have a sealant kit and/or a tire inflator kit while other vehicles come with run-flat tires.

Common Spare Tire Alternatives

Tire repair kits usually include a can of sealant and a small portable air compressor. The sealant is a thick, gooey substance that comes in an aerosol can. It is designed to temporarily fill a puncture (if it’s small) so you can drive to the closest tire repair shop to get it patched or replaced. If your tire is just slowly losing air pressure, you may be able to just use the air compressor to fill it up again until you can get it checked out. The problem with these repair kits is, if you have a large gaping hole or your tire is in shreds, a can of sealant or an air compressor isn’t going to help you.

Some car manufacturers are using Run-flat tires instead of including a full-sized spare tire or inflator kit. Run-flat tires are made to endure most road hazards, even a puncture, and continue to drive for a limited distance of about 50 miles before needing to be replaced.

Unfortunately, none of these spare tire alternatives would help if you’re left stranded on the side of the road with a damaged tire that cannot be repaired. Your only option then is to call for roadside assistance or a tow truck.

Why do some cars come without spare tires?

Car manufacturers are ditching the spare tire for various reasons including space, weight, and cost. Spare tires take up space in your vehicle and automakers have found that by eliminating the spare tire, they can build a more spacious vehicle. Not only do they take up room in the storage and design of the vehicle, but they also add weight. By lightening the load, the vehicle will get better fuel efficiency and make an easier workload for the engine. So, by removing the spare tire, auto manufacturers are increasing space, and vehicle efficiency as well as saving money.

Can you sell a car without a spare tire?

Yes, but if the vehicle has a spot for one, but it’s missing, the seller should disclose that information at the time of sale.
