Your Summer Road Trip Checklist

Your Summer Road Trip Checklist

As the days get warmer and longer, many of us are looking forward to the day when we can hit the road with family or friends for a long-awaited road trip.  Whether it’s a weekend vacation to the lake or a cross-country road trip, no matter the destination, it’s important your vehicle is ready for wherever the road leads you.

Here at Hilltop Tire Service, safety is our number one priority, so we put together some frequently asked questions and a Vehicle Summer Travel Maintenance checklist for your vehicle.  We want to make sure you get there safely – and back!

Summer Travel Vehicle Check List:

Tires – Inspect the tires (including the spare – if you have one) for any signs of uneven wear, bald spots, or damage to the tire. Ensure there is enough tread to get you safely home again.  If your tires are wearing uneven now, a road trip will only make them worse.  You may not even need to replace them; a wheel alignment or tire rotation may be all they need.

Fluids – Oil change and windshield washer fluids are the commonly known fluids.  But don’t neglect the transmission fluid, brake fluid, power steering fluid, and coolant.  These fluids play a vital role in keeping your vehicle running smoothly, especially during hot summer days.

Windshield Wipers – You’ll want to see the sights on your adventure, so if you haven’t replaced your wiper blades since winter, you’ll want to do that now so you're prepared for any rainy weather that may come your way.  It is recommended to replace windshield wipers twice a year.

Brakes – Make sure your brakes have enough life left in them to get you there and back safely.  If you notice a squealing noise when braking, it’s time to get them replaced.

Battery – Most drivers worry about their battery dying during the cold winter months, but actually, it’s more common for a battery to die because of heat, not cold.  Get a free battery check today at Hilltop Tire Service.

Air filters – Check both the engine and cabin air filters before you go.  If they are clogged or dirty, you’ll want to make sure they are replaced. Not only will it help engine performance and the quality of the air inside your car, but it will help with fuel economy as well.

A/C Service – You will want to make sure the air conditioning is in good working order. The experts at Hilltop Tire Service can inspect the belts and hoses for any leaks or damage, and check the coolant.  The last thing you want on your journey is to feel hot and sweaty because the a/c doesn’t work.

FAQ’s

What should I replace on my car before a road trip?  3 inexpensive items that will make a world of difference are Windshield Wipers, Cabin Air Filter, and Engine Air filter.  There is nothing like seeing clearly and breathing in clean fresh air on your trip!

Prior to summer travel, do I need an oil change?  If it’s been 3-6 months or more than 3,000 miles, the answer is yes, you need an oil change.  Oil is the lifeblood of your engine and over time, the oil gets thick and dirty. If it’s not replaced on time, it could lead to serious damage.

Is highway mileage easier on a car?  Yes, it is!  Even though you’re driving more miles at higher speeds, your vehicle doesn’t have to shift between gears time and time again, making it easier on your car.  Traveling long distances is good for the alternator and battery too because it gives them time to charge properly.  You also won’t be using your brakes as much, and highways are generally smoother than side roads.

Should I rent or drive my car on a long road trip?   There’s no right or wrong answer here and it depends on your circumstances.  You’ll want to factor in all the expenses of renting a car vs. using your own.  A few things to also consider when making your decision - If you get a bigger vehicle, you’ll use more gas and vice versa.  If your car is leased, you’ll want to make sure you don’t go over the miles you agreed to use.

Do cars need a rest? A well-maintained car in good working order does not need a rest from the road during a long car ride. However, it is important for your safety, to keep alert, by taking breaks or switching drivers every couple of hours.

We hope this blog is helpful as you prepare for your adventure of a lifetime!  If you have any other questions, we are here to help you will all your travel needs.
